Maturing is realising that university does not teach you sh*t!

Or at least the important stuff you need to know about the corporate world

I remember attending an employer open day advertising 3 month internship for £21k salary.

I embarrassedly blurted out: “Rah £7k a month…”

One of the attendees looked at me with JUDGEMENT: “It’s pro-rata mate…”

I doubled down on my ignorance: “yeah, pro rata £7K every single month…”

He looked at me again with judgment and a bit of pity, then proceeded to explain what pro-rata actually meant.

Long story short…

Let’s say a 3-month internship is advertised as paying £21,000 (pro-rata).

That’s not what you’ll be paid over three months ❌

That is the annual salary, assuming it was a full-time role ✅

So for a 3-month internship, they’ll calculate how much of that annual salary you’d earn over those 3 months.

So instead of getting £7K every month ❌

It’s more like £1,750 (before tax) every month ✅

So you’re getting a portion of the full-time annual salary based on how long you’re working.

I know damn well, this is not common knowledge to everyone so remember this when you see “pro-rata” on the internships via the Beyond Education website.
