Black Tech Fest Recap

The job market is cooked, but people are still getting jobs, so what’s your excuse?

That’s how I opened my talk at Black Tech Fest.

Here’s a breakdown of the advice shared:

  1. The job market has always been “cooked” in some way

    • Adapt, evolve, and keep up with the times to win

  2. It’s always a skills issue

    • Hard Skills: Figure out what’s needed for your industry

    • Marketing: Get visible to recruiters & hiring managers

    • Sales: Get really good at communicating your value

  3. “The job market is competitive”

    • So compete and be the best player

  4. “I’m not sure what I want to do”

    • F*ck around and find out innit

    • Search for any open jobs at Beyond Education
      → Shameless plug naturally

    • Pick a job description that seems interesting to you

  5. “I’m just here to network” is not good enough

    • Are you looking for industry insights?

    • Are you looking for community?

    • Are you looking for a job?

  6. Don’t follow advice blindly.

    • Play the game based on your context

    • Go for roles that pay if money is priority

    • Take a pay cut for sponsored qualifications if you can afford to do that

  7. You will get rejected

    • Rejection is inevitable → Part of the process

    • Rejection is redirection → Look elsewhere

    • Rejection is feedback → Learn from it

My engagement is just non-existent, i.e. I’m getting 1 like per post because my content is not being pushed for whatever reason. Doesn’t really make sense for an account with 25k+ followers, so a contact at LinkedIn is looking into it for me.
