I am not a fan of networking events, personally.

Cons of networking:
↳ Mingling with strangers over awkward small talk…k*ll me now!

Pros of networking:

• Getting a mentor

• Job opportunities

• Career advancement

• Making some friends

• Getting leads for business

So the pros outweigh the cons.

The Octopus Energy Career’s Fair is happening this Thursday, so here’s some free game to make the most of it:

1. Conversation starters: You need to have your one-liners patterned to kickstart conversation:
   

   • “So what brings you here today…”

   • “What are you looking to get out of this event…”

   • “How are you enjoying the day so far…”

2. Talk less, listen more: Once you’ve initiated the conversation, ask open-ended questions to keep the convo going:
   

   • “What does your day-to-day role look like…”

   • “What made you get into that field of work…”

   • Do you see yourself pivoting into a different f
     

3. LinkedIn connection: When you reach the point of exchanging LinkedIn with someone you’d like to connect with, open the QR code to your profile on the app and get them to scan it. If they send you a request, it makes it easier to initiate conversation follow-ups. There's some psychological play there, lol.
   

4. Collect emails: Busy people tend to air messages on LinkedIn, especially if their DMs are full (I am guilty of this 🤧). When you approach someone you really want to follow up with after the event, get your notes app out and just ask for their email. Then you have a more direct way of contacting them. Works about 8/10 times x
